A single-family house. An attempt at finding the contemporary formula for a suburban house with extensive utilitarian program, the form of which would reflect the best modernist traditions, while remaining a contemporary, individual response to the client’s needs.
The point of departure was the plot – a forested, but completely flat parcel. The idea was to create a house which would evoke a direct impression of living in the garden. Hence the extensive use of glazed surfaces. However, the house is built in a moderately urbanized area, which enforced the need to give the residents maximum privacy. The frame supports the ceiling, has side walls protecting against the curious eye of the neighbors, but also opens up widely to the garden. The frame channels the view from the house, directs them, pointing to the most advantageous side.
The design develops the frame concept. From the side of the garden, the house is formed by intermingling frames blinding all of the glazed surfaces in the living and bedroom area. Varying frame depth adds a dynamic quality to the building as well as particular terraces it roofs.
From the side of the street, the house is more generic and monolithic, with a small number of openings. It constitutes a full form aimed at magnifying the sense of security of its residents. From this side, the quadric prism form is enriched by interruptions, wedges made of a different finishing material – black lining is clearly distinguished from the white plaster. These “wedges” in the form create a porch substitute and partially roof the garage driveway.
In order to provide the residents direct contact with the garden, the house is practically one-storey – you can descend from every bedroom or room through large terrace windows directly to the lawn. However, additional functions were located at different levels in order to fit this relatively small plot. This way the swimming pool was placed in the underground part, although was still provided with an outlook to the garden through glazing one of the walls, opening to an artificial trench serving as outside stairs as well. The recreation room is a sort of belvedere finishing the flat roof of the house.
